Going on a first date can be very nerve-wracking, but dressing properly can really help you to feel more confident about the whole experience. In order to make the right first impression when meeting your potential life partner, there are several things you should think about before you put together your outfit.
Where are you meeting?
Are you meeting in a formal location, such as a swanky downtown restaurant for dinner in the evening? For these types of scenarios, you would need to dress more formal, so you may to have to check out your wardrobe a few days in advance to ensure you have suitable attire. For less formal restaurants, cafes, bars, cinemas and other popular first date destinations, you should choose less formal clothing, such as black chinos.
What will you be doing?
If you are simply going to sit there next to each other or opposite each other at a table, you don’t need to worry too much about being practical. However, if you have something a little bit adventurous and unique planned out in order to impress your date, you should ensure you wear clothing, which is going to let you, move easily and carry out the necessary tasks involved.
What kind of impression do you want to give?
Do you want to release your personality and dress in vibrant and bold colours? Are you worried your date might think you dress too quirky or edgy? Do you want to be yourself or hold back a little bit until you have gotten to know your date better? Think about the type of impression you want to give and how you want to come across to your date. There’s a lot to be said for being yourself, but depending on the situation and the circumstances, you might want to alter your regular style slightly.
Confidence is the key – so be confident!
You should feel comfortable and confident in what you are wearing, otherwise it will be obvious that you are not feeling too comfortable and this will instantly make you appear much less confident. If something looks great for a first date and everybody tells you it looks great but then you don’t just feel like it’s you or that it’s comfortable, don’t be afraid to take it off and put something else on – even if it’s something you’ve had in your wardrobe for a long time now.
Don’t dress too formally
You should look like you’ve put an effort into getting ready for the date, but you shouldn’t dress too formally. Not only will this make it look like you’re far too keen and you put in far too much effort, but you might not even be going to places which require you to dress formally. This will make it look like you don’t know how to dress properly in public, and at the end of the day, you should dress like you would on a normally visit to that specific place (but with a little more effort!).
